Mountain Biking in DuPont State Forest
Biking in DuPont
DuPont State Forest is a great place to spend at least a few days. Recently I had the opportunity to take a trip there with the guys for a long weekend and spend it relaxing and doing some mountain biking in DuPont State Forest.
For those who like to ride, this place is awesome! It has multiple long trails that are technically challenging and fun. My favorite is the same as many people – Ridgeline. This flowy one mile track is a nice downhill from the top and allows you to get some really good speed on the way down. Check out my 2nd ride down it…so fun!!
The Park
In DuPont there are a total of around 92 trails to explore this beautiful area. The people on the trails with you are some of the friendliest folks I’ve come across in my travel. When they saw the older somewhat overweight guy sitting on the side of the trailer catching his breath everyone asked the question are you okay? I’m going to chalk that up to friendly bikers and not my being out of shape. The trails in DuPont are multi-use so you need to watch the corners and for people who might be out on the trail with you.
Where to Stay
I would highly recommend staying in a place nearby so that you can get out on the trails early in the morning. Other things that we did were visiting Brevard North Carolina which is about a half an hour away from. There is also Pisgah National Forest which is adjacent to Brevard and has even longer trails to enjoy on your bike or on foot.
We looked for several places to stay when planning this trip. We finally agreed on a place just outside of the park we found on HomeAway. This gem was very secluded and was the perfect fit for the three of us. The cabin had an awesome front porch for sitting and just enjoying nature. It also had a fish pond if you wanted to catch a few trout (you pay per pound caught).
Overall, there was plenty of space for three guys to stretch out and have their own space yet hang out together. It has a separate bedroom on the first floor and a loft with a full or queen-size plus a twin size bed. There was a fully equipped kitchen that was plenty big enough to prepare meals and eat together. It was a little bit of a uphill climb to get there but our minivan loaded with 3 bikes and the three of us managed.
What’s Nearby
In nearby Brevard there are the usual amenities you need. There are grocery stores, gas stations, and a lovely downtown area where you can find plenty of local restaurants and shops.
One of the places that we went for dinner that I would highly recommend was Jordan Street Cafe. It gets pretty good reviews on TripAdvisor and I can say we all enjoyed our meals. The wedge salad was huge enough for two people, and my entree portion was big too.
So, if you’re looking for a great weekend or week long getaway, I highly recommend spending some time in the Brevard N.C. area, and specifically Mountain Biking in DuPont State Forest.
Safe travels and good riding!
